Answer:
When it is used in the context of computer technology
Computer
cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer's hard
drive while visiting certain Websites. Upon your return to this Website,
the cookie will act as a messenger that identifies you to the Website's
computers also known as servers.
WHAT
COOKIES CAN DO
There are several reasons for the use of cookies. One use is collecting
demographic information on how you use a Website. For instance, how
many times you returned to the site, what links or information were
viewed, how many pages were looked at and how long you stayed.
The
next reason would be to personalize your experience with this website.
As example, when you shop online, the site will ask you to complete
a form with your name and shipping address. It may ask if you want
this information stored for future use. When you return to this site
for another purchase, magically, your name appears on the opening
web page and your shipping address will automatically be filled-in
on the order form. This was accomplished through the cookie previously
stored on your computer.
Finally,
cookies are used to monitor advertisements. In marketing language
this is called target marketing. The cookie can track what type of
information you click on while at a site and then deliver specific
ads tailored to personal interests.
WHAT
COOKIES CANNOT DO
Cookies cannot act as a software program and read information on your
hard drive nor can they spread viruses. They are simple text files
that live on your hard drive. They cannot activate themselves. They
are only useful to the originating Website for the above reasons.
The main concern for cookies is the loss of your anonymity on the
Net.
HOW
TO CONTROL COOKIES
Setting your Web browser to reject cookies is one way to manage your
personal information. Depending on what version Web browser, the setting is located in different places; however, generally are under preferences. The best instructions for your particular browser will
come from the browser Help feature.
Another
method for removing cookies is accomplished through the Web browser
software. Rather than blocking cookies, delete them. Again this feature is dependent upon the version Web browser. Check the Help
feature for complete instructions.
The
last way is to search the hard drive for the Cookie Folder. For Windows
go to Start, Search (or Find), choose All Files and Folders and enter
the word Cookie and make sure you are looking in your local hard drive,
usually (C:), and click Search. Look in the folders entitled Cookies
and delete the files. Important: if you have saved certain types of information so you do not have to re-enter, deleting all cookies may delete this saved file.
Cookies are small messengers that can be helping hands or can be an
invasion of privacy. The choice for managing cookies is up to you. Please pass the chocolate chips!
